How to Use

Using the glass bottle cutter is easy. Just adjust the size so the cutter sits on the bottle at your desired position. Then press firmly and rotate the bottle until a score line is made around the circumference. Now shock the score line by alternating between extreme heat and extreme cold. There are a couple of ways to do this. The easiest way is to dip the bottle in simmering water for a few seconds and then dip it in ice cold water. Do this a few times and the bottle will come apart at the score line. If you intend to use the bottle as a drinking glass, finish by using wet and dry sandpaper to sand down the rim at the top, inside and outside.

How long do the cutters last?
The manufacturer rates the cutters at 10,000 hours. There are three cutters on the wheel. So if you feel it is becoming less effective, you can loosen the cutting wheel using the supplied Allen key and rotate it to the next cutter. Of course the exact lifetime will vary depending on how hard you press, but it is likely that you will be able to cut hundreds, if not thousands, of bottles. -
How easy is it to use?
Like any DIY product, there is skill involved. Start by practising on a few unwanted bottles. If you’re not confident, just go in with the attitude that you’ll probably mess it up! Then once you’ve done your first, however badly, you’ll have a lot more confidence for the next one. After you’ve done three, you should have a pretty good feel for the process. The biggest challenge is achieving the separation. This just takes some time and patience. The first time you do this it might seem like it will never happen. Give it some time and it will eventually break. -
Is it safe to use?
Well you are working with glass and you shouldconsider your own DIY experience before starting. It is a straight-forward process, but if you were to do something like apply a huge amount of pressure while cutting or run your finger over a freshly cut top, then there will be blood. Wearing gloves is a good idea. -
Do you recommend it for kids?
My kids? No. Your kids? Possibly. I’d say high school age at a minimum. The initial scoring stage is pretty easy, but stick some gloves on them, just in case. If boys object to gloves, just tell them they’re about to do something dangerous. They’ll like that. Our recommended breaking method involves hot water on a stove top, so use your judgement if this is appropriate for your kids. Also keep in mind that when the bottle does break, the edges can be quite sharp. Don’t let them touch the edge until it has been sanded.
